CAT: students rush for prime slots
Registration begins without glitches on first day
Bangalore: Long queues were found outside Axis Bank branches across the city where CAT 2010 registrations commenced on Tuesday. A young applicant, who had taken a break from his office work to complete his registration, said the scramble to get to the application booth first was because everybody wanted to book themselves a "comfortable slot".
Compared to last year, the application process was much smoother and barring a few instances where the server was overloaded and candidates had to wait, things went smoothly. CAT aspirants flocked to these centres, despite the fact that the last date is only on September 27, because most of them are trying to 'block' the last few dates for testing and aiming for the testing centres that are located close to the city centre. There are 10 testing centres in Bangalore, a majority of which are located at a fair distance from the city centre.
"Given last year's track record, most of us are going for dates in the last week. If you see the last week, the software glitches and other testing issues got ironed out by the latter part of the testing window. People are rushing to ensure that they get a favourable time slot," says Ajay Vaswan. His friends were more frank when he added that the last few dates also have a bigger advantage as many questions, or at least question paper patterns are discussed on web groups by students. "Though we are made to sign an undertaking that we will not discuss questions, many of us discuss our tests. This gives the students who take the test in the end a distinct advantage," he said. "Besides, it also gives us more time to prepare," he said. This year's CAT is being held much earlier compared than previous years. In 2009, it was held in the last week of November and first week of December.
The CAT testing window has increased from last year's 10 days to over 20 days. Students can appear for CAT on any date from October 27 to November 24. Students can pick any one of these days but slots get filled on a first-come-first-served basis.
To guide students through the registration process, the official CAT website (www.catiim.in) has uploaded a simplified step-by-step guide, from test centre regulations to instructions for D-day.
