Employees of private schools, colleges to get ESI coverage
  • About one crore people will be covered under the scheme
  • ESI hospitals in Davangere, Hubli and Mysore to be upgraded
Bangalore: Lakhs of employees of private schools, colleges, engineering and medical colleges and other educational institutions in the State will be brought under the coverage of Employees' State Insurance (ESI) hospitals.

Minister for Labour B.N. Bache Gowda, who chaired a meeting with officials of Labour, ESI, various labour union leaders and experts, told presspersons on Friday that employees of private educational institutions would get ESI hospital facilities from this financial year. To provide medical facilities in ESI hospitals, each employee has to contribute 6.5 per cent of their total monthly salary to the ESI Corporation.
From May 1, 2010, all those employees whose monthly salary is less than Rs. 15,000 will be covered under the scheme. Of the 6.5 per cent contribution to the ESI Corporation, the employers would contribute 4.75 per cent while employee contributes 1.75 per cent in the total salary.

About one crore people, including 20 lakh employees and their family members, would be covered under the scheme.

Employees covered under the ESI would get social security benefits such as medical, sickness, maternity, temporary and permanent disablement benefit, and dependants' benefit, Rahimunnisa, Director, directorate of ESIS Medical Services, Bangalore, said.

A decision had been taken to upgrade three ESI hospitals from 50-bed ones to 100-bed ones in Davangere, Hubli and Mysore at a cost of Rs. 100 crore each.

In 2009-10, medicines worth Rs. 24 crore had been supplied to ESI hospitals.

He said ICU unit and haemodialysis facilities would be provided at the ESI hospital at Indiranagar in Bangalore.

New hospitals
Mr. Gowda said ESI hospitals with 100 beds would be opened in Bommasandra, Doddaballapur and Shimoga t a cost of Rs. 200 crore to Rs. 250 crore each.

For the benefit of employees/labourers, additional dispensaries would be opened at Sarjapur Road, Gottigere, Laggere, Peenya Industrial Area, Mathikere, Konappana Agrahara, Madanayakana Halli, Bashetti Halli, and Koramangala.

New dispensaries would be opened at Nayandanahalli, Sunkadakatte, Sahakarinagar, Nagavara/Venkateshapura in Bangalore, the Minister said.
