Young varsity draws foreign students

Bangalore: The two-year-old University of Horticultural Sciences (UHS) at Bagalkot has already started attracting students from abroad for postgraduate and doctoral programmes.

Students from Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Burundi, Malawai and Rwanda have enrolled in the university. There are only two other horticultural universities in the country, and they are located in Himachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Minister for Horticulture Umesh V. Katti said foreign nationals have registered in the university and they have been sponsored under the Central government quota.

Around 920 students are pursuing B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Horticulture) in the current academic year.

As many as 68 students have enrolled for postgraduate studies, he said. Mr. Katti said UHS has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Texas A&M University for implementing programmes in the field of education and research in horticulture. Similarly, action is being taken to enter into MoUs with the UAS, Bangalore and Dharwad, and Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Hessarghatta, for taking up coordinated programmes in teaching and research, he said.
