A LEGEND SPEAKS: N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies, interacts with students during the 10th annual convocation of IIIT-B in Bangalore on Saturday.

Bangalore: On Saturday, 113 students of the International Institute of Information Technology donned their graduation hats, tassels and gowns, and received their much-cherished Masters degree in Technology.
Having graduated 1,132 postgraduates over the past decade, this is the institute's 10 {+t} {+h} batch of students. Dr. V.S. Ramamurthy, director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies and the former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, addressed the audience as chief guest. He told students to focus on the fundamentals of science and technology and take on new challenges.

The Chairman of the institute and founder of Infosys Technologies N.R. Narayana Murthy told students that he saw two sides to India. While one is the India that contributes “robust growth through challenging times”, the other India is mired in poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition.

“More than 200 million people in India don't have access to safe drinking water. About 650 million Indians do not have access to sanitation facilities that you and I are used to. We have been consistently ranked low as far as the human development index goes,” he pointed out.

He told students that they could change this despondent situation by using science, technology and innovation to tackle these societal imbalances.

In future, the ability to accept, evaluate and adopt new ideas would separate the successful from the unsuccessful, he said.

Ashwani Kumar Datt, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), told the students that there were plenty of opportunities for young students.

IIIT-B director S. Sadagopan highlighted the various achievements of the institute. The institute graduated its first international students, Ricardo Lage from Brazil. “This year too all but seven of our graduating students have been either placed in companies or are pursuing higher education. IIT-B will continue to work hard till the last student is placed. Our friends from the industry who have supported us all along deserve a big hand,” he added.
