Counselling for admissions to engineering courses postponed

It is likely to resume on July 14; more information from AICTE awaited

Bangalore: The State Government on Monday put off till July 14 the counselling, which was earlier rescheduled to start on July 7, for admission to engineering courses following incomplete information on approval granted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to 37 engineering colleges that has resulted in reduction of 6,012 seats in comparison to last year's intake.
Announcing this here, Higher Education Minister Arvind Limbavali told presspersons that a complete seat matrix could not be prepared as many reputed institutions, including government colleges, were among the 37 colleges that have not received complete information from AICTE on approval.

“The assurance to begin counselling on July 14 is tentative as it is subject to the information to be made available by AICTE,” he added.

This is for the second time that the counselling process is being postponed due to delay in approval process by AICTE. Originally, counselling was to start on June 18 and it was postponed to July 7 after AICTE promised that it would complete the process by June 30. Mr. Limbavali said that the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, UBDT College of Engineering, Davangere, R.V. College of Engineering, engineering colleges run by the PES group, all based in Bangalore, the Malnad Engineering College, Hassan, the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, were among those which have got either no information on approval or approval only for some courses. He said that there is no reduction of seats in any institutions that have got clear information about the approval process. “As many as 30,512 seats are available in 148 colleges to be filled under the government quota through the Karnataka Examinations Authority,” he added.

About the reason for confusion on AICTE approval, Mr. Limbavali said that the employees posted to AICTE “have no experience to deal with approval process”. Besides, they are not conversant with the new online approval process which itself is facing technical challenges. The Union Government had transferred a large number of AICTE staff early this year following an allegation of corruption in the process of approval.

Mr. Limbavali said that the Government had written asking AICTE to clear the confusion over approval to 37 colleges or to approve the colleges based on the previous year's intake.

“I spoke to AICTE over phone this morning and based on the assurance given, we have fixed July 14 as a tentative date to start counselling,” he said and added that two officers from the Education Department would be leaving for Delhi to coordinate with AICTE.

Students who are awaiting counselling are being sent messages regarding postponement.

The Minister also said that the Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges' Association too has requested the Government to put off counselling by a week due to confusion over approval.

Due to this delay, the Minister said, counselling for the casual vacancy round of admission to medical and dental colleges have been postponed.
