Vice-chancellors appointed for agricultural varsities

Bangalore: The appointment of Vice-Chancellors to the two prestigious agricultural universities of the State was made on Wednesday.
Dean and extension expert K. Narayana Gowda of Bio-resources Complex project fame has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences-Bangalore. Rayappa Ramappa Hanchinal, Director of Extension of the University of Agricultural Sciences-Dharwad, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of that university.

The names of these two were on the panel of names of suggested by search committees which shortlisted three candidates each for the appointment to the above universities.

The search committees had been formed after Governor H.R. Bhardwaj had expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in filling up the vacancies of VCs.

Mr. Gowda (59) took charge of the new responsibility in Bangalore on Wednesday. He told The Hindu that: “I have a vision for the development of farmers through efficient research and extension work in agricultural field.” He said there was a dire need to increase the income levels of farmers and instil confidence among them that agriculture can still be remunerative.

Mr. Gowda, with 36 years of experience in various fields in the university, shot to fame after he served as project co-ordinator of the Rural Bio-Resources Complex Project of the Union Department of Bio-Technology taken up on a pilot basis in Tubagere hobli of Doddaballapur taluk. The project got accolades from agricultural scientists across the country as it managed to bring about positive changes and registered over 11 per cent growth rate in agriculture in the project area as against the country's average of about 2 per cent. Mr. Gowda was honoured with the Best Extension scientist national award by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for this work.

Mr. Hanchinal (58) has got international exposure as he has worked as senior seed production specialist in five West African countries besides working as adviser to the Indonesian government for wheat research and development. He has also worked as Assistant Director-General of ICAR.
