Imparting holistic and inspiring education

The academic courses offered by the Central University of Karnataka are refreshingly reflective of the vision embodied in its charter to serve the requirements of the coming generations who opt for higher education in the country. The courses are designed in a manner keeping in view the challenging needs of the modern world ad the dire requirements incumbent upon higher education in creating individuals who are educated in the true sense of the term rather than just generate batches of degree-holders. The University strongly believes that the education that it imparts should be holistic and inspiring enough to create citizens of tomorrow who are well-informed of their national ethos while at the same time well-trained to ride the waves in a global scenario. The Central University of Karnataka strives to provide an inspiring locale for fulfilling the educational and developmental ambitions of scholars drawn to pursue their studies in various disciplines.
Integrated courses
The Central University of Karnataka has flagged off an innovative and unique course in tandem with the challenging needs and growing aspirations of today's generation of students. As part of fulfilling the objectives envisaged, the University announces the commencement of a Five-Year Integrated B.A. Honours and M.A. Degree Course from the academic year 2010 onwards, with the classes commencing in July 2010. The Integrated Course running up to Masters is offered in a few major areas such as History, Economics, Geography, Psychology and English. The programme is interdisciplinary in content and rigorous in framework, training students in a comprehensive as well as in-depth mode. The University also provides information and Communication Technology facilities to the participants in consonance with the character of the emergent educational and professional scenarios across the world.

A full time regular programme, the Integrated B.A. Honours and M.A. Degree Course is offered in a format that is flexible in terms of the options available. The Choice Based Credit System or the Cafeteria model followed by the University helps the students exercise their choice in selecting their preferred subjects and branches of study as also empower them with an informed control over their studies.

Further, on completion of Semester VI or at the end of the 3rd year, the student who qualifies for the B.A. Honours degree can avail the Exit Option. In the normal course of events the aspirant will complete the required ten semesters (5 years) and graduate with a Masters (M.A.) degree in the chosen discipline. With the completion of the B.A. Honours Course and the gaining of the required credits, the students can branch out to the disciplines of History, Economics, Geography, Psychology and English at M.A. level.

The programme enables aspirants to enroll themselves as students of the Central University at the completion of their 12th Standard education. We expect that the five-year course would make the students experts and beacons in their respective fields in innovative ways. The highlights of the programme are a range of subjects to choose from; an array of departments, schools and centers of excellence to migrate across; well-designed programme comprising of Foundation Course, Core Course, Elective Course, Language Course, Allied Course, and Social Orientation Course that is much in advance when compared to traditional frameworks; choice-based Credit System or Cafeteria Model that empowers the students and the faculty alike with more flexibility than conventional models; imparting of specialised or targeted, and comprehensive or holistic education to aspirants as soon as they complete their +2 level of education; availability of an Exit Option to exercise after completion of B.A. Honours.
M.A., M.Phil Courses
During the first year of its inception, the CUK successfully launched M.Phil. Programmes in English, Psychology, and Economics and fresh applications have been invited this year for M.Phil. courses in English, Psychology, History, Economics, and Geography. All those students who will be selected through an entrance examination are given a scholarship of Rs. 3000 each per month along with an annual contingency of Rs.8000. The courses are designed keeping in view the latest methodologies in the areas concerned.

CUK launched its first M.A. course in English and the students have already completed two semesters successfully and fresh applications have been invited for the common entrance test this year. The course contains a variety of topics including the best selections from world literature and regional literature. The course would be taught using audio-visual aids along with screening of the films which are based on the classics which are a part of the syllabus. The students are also trained in critical skills, translation skills, journalistic skills, communicative skills in English and computer skills. Such trainings in multiple skills will also be a part of the M.A. course in Kannada Language and Literature to be offered this year. Kannada literature and language will be taught from an interdisciplinary angle using latest critical approaches and the students will get to study the best of both the ancient and modern works of the Kannada literary traditions along with a selection from world literature in Kannada translation. M.Sc., in Geospatial Applications in Regional Development which is launched this year is a unique course and first of its kind in South India. The MBA and M.Com courses offered this year have been designed in a novel way keeping in view the needs and challenges of the era of post –globalization.

All the courses offered by CUK are interdisciplinary in nature and the students have a variety of subjects to choose from the allied and supportive subjects across the departments and schools.
