Resource centres for disabled to come up in four varsities
  • Equipment to be procured for students with disabilities
  • More funds for rehabilitation centres planned
Bangalore: This academic year, resource centres for students with disabilities will be set up in four universities in four divisions in the State — Bangalore, Belgaum, Gulbarga and Mysore. This initiative that seeks to increase enrolment of students with disabilities has already been approved by the Government, State Commissioner for disabilities Das Suryawanshi said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

His office had written to vice-chancellors and registrars of the four universities on this. This was first proposed at the Inter-University Board meeting held in Belgaum. However, now the finer details were being worked out. This resource centre would facilitate providing equipment (such as computerised Braille systems or other assistive technologies) for students to use. It would help the visually impaired students to get the notes printed in Braille on the spot, magnifier for the use of low vision students, copier to help students to get the notes photocopied and sign language expert for the deaf, Mr. Suryawanshi said.
The Government had decided to provide additional funds to the District Disability Rehabilitation Centres in the State. According to the 2001 Census, 2.5 per cent of the population was affected by disabilities. In Karnataka, this figure was pegged at 9.4 lakh, including 4.02 lakh women.

Mr. Suryawanshi said that his office was trying to work with private companies to increase job opportunities to the disabled. Taking stock of various activities in this sector, he said Karnataka had been declared a model State and certificates had been issued by the office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of India, for the best practices since past three years.

The office had taken up several cases on suo motu basis, be it in the field of medical education where they ensured that the 3 per cent quota was followed or ensuring that various schemes were implemented. They had ensured that job promises were met and even intervened in job places where employees were not being treated on an equal basis, he said.

The Commissioner pointed out that every Saturday Free legal Advise was given to Persons with Disabilities in the Office of the State Commissioner for Disabilities in Cox Town.
