IISc. scientist gets Chevalier award
Shyamala Mani's contribution to neuroscience recognised
FRENCH HONOUR:The Consul-General of France, Dominique Causse, conferring the award on Shyamala Mani of the Centre for Neurosciences, IISc., in Bangalore on Monday.
Bangalore: Shyamala Mani, an Associate Professor at the Centre of Neurosciences, Indian Institute of Science, was conferred the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques (Knight of the Order of Academic Palms) at the Alliance Français de Bangalore here on Monday. The award was presented by Dominique Causse, the Consul General of France.
The award was presented in recognition of Ms. Mani's significant contribution to neuroscience, in particular her work under the ICMR-Inserm collaboration and the International Associated Laboratory ‘Protect' (DBT-Inserm) on neonatal lesions and the influence of malnutrition on the development of the foetal brain.
Ms. Mani said she was honoured to be bestowed with this award and thanked her family, colleagues, and her French collaborator for making it possible. “The Chevalier de l'ordre des Palmes Academiques is an Honour of chivalry presented to individuals by the French Government for their contribution to academia, culture or education,” said Mr. Causse.
It is one of the oldest orders of Europe, and one of the highest civil decorations, he added. Created by Napolean in 1808, the award was initially given to teachers, however the scope of the award was widened in 1886 to allow for the recognition of all contributions of academia and culture to France, he said.
“This award is a testimony to your career and connection to France,” said Mr. Causse while presenting the award to Ms. Mani.
