Revanna accuses Government of neglecting education sector

JD(S) in Mysore to campaign for Srikante Gowda
  • Congress refused to support Dalit candidate: Janata Dal (Secular) leader
  • BJP Government has mismanaged the power sector
Mysore: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Minister H.D. Revanna has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government of neglecting the education sector in the last two years.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, he recalled that “revolutionary changes” had been introduced by the H.D. Kumaraswamy Government in the field of education, but the BJP Government had completely sidelined the education sector. This attitude of the Government was affected students adversely, he said.
Mr. Revanna, who was in the city to campaign for K.T. Srikante Gowda contesting for the South Graduates' Constituency seat in the Legislative Council, stated that over 500 high schools, 200 junior colleges, 22 polytechnic colleges and nine government engineering colleges had been started during Mr. Kumaraswamy's term. All facilities including the appointment of teachers and lecturers had been provided, but the BJP Government had not made any effort to open new government educational institutions, he said.

On the failure of the party to come to an electoral understanding with the Congress for the election to the Rajya Sabha scheduled for June 17, Mr. Revanna said that because the Congress high command had refused to support Janata Dal(Secular) Dalit candidate Danish Ali, the party had decided to stand behind businessman Vijay Mallya, when he sought support. “We do not need the support of the Congress. In fact, the Congress won in a few constituencies because of JD(S) support,” he said.

Interestingly, he also sided with State Congress president R.V. Deshpande, who is under a cloud for the alleged misuse of flood relief funds collected by the party. Mr. Revanna said that it was not right to accuse a person of embezzling funds collected from the public to help flood victims. It was a conspiracy to prevent him from entering into the fray for a Rajya Sabha seat, he alleged.

On a question on his not responding to the notice issued to him by the Karnataka Milk Federation, he replied by pointing out that he had attended the board meeting conducted by the federation. “What else did his detractors need as a proof of his honesty?”

Accusing the BJP Government of mismanaging the power sector, he said that he could restrict the quantum of loss suffered by the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) by purchasing power from private companies at low cost. Accusing BJP of government of not safeguarding interest of teachers and lecturers, JD(S) candidate and sitting MLC Mr. Gowda alleged that the present Government had failed in giving a dole to graduates, as promised, and had done nothing to solve the problems faced by assistant teacher.
