CET seats: State assurance to anxious MBBS aspirants

All seats in CET quota this year will be available: Minister
  • Governing body of the MCI to re-inspect five medical colleges
  • There are 413 seats in CET quota in these colleges
Bangalore: The State Government on Thursday has assured MBBS aspirants that all the seats earmarked for the CET quota will be available this year and in all likelihood the admissions for 413 of the 1,872 CET seats in five medical colleges will be completed in the casual vacancy round.

The Medical Council of India had granted recognition for these five colleges two months ago and this has since been stayed following the dissolution of the MCI. The State Government has now requested the newly constituted six-member ad hoc governing body of the MCI to re-inspect these colleges at the earliest and accord permission for the admissions.
Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda, who is in touch with the MCI and the colleges concerned, told The Hindu that the re-inspection is expected to be completed in about a fortnight. “We still have time for the admission process to be completed. The applicants need not be anxious and all the seats earmarked in the CET quota for this academic year will be available,” the Minister said.
Re-inspection
The governing body of the MCI has opted to re-inspect five medical colleges on various grounds, and four of these colleges are in the Government sector at Raichur, Bidar, Shimoga and Hubli, while the fifth is a private one, the Shamanur Shivashankarappa Institute of Medical Sciences. Put together, the CET quota in these colleges total to 413 seats.

The intake in the three new Government colleges is 100 each, while that of the KMC Hubli has been reduced by 50 seats from 150 and the CET quota in the Shamanur Shivashankarappa college is 63 out of a total of 150 seats.

Of a total of 4,069 medical seats in the government, private and minority-run medical colleges, the total seats in the government pool (to be filled through CET) is 1,872, while the managements will have a quota of 2,033 seats. In all, 164 seats have been set aside for the All India quota for which entrance will be conducted by the Centre.

There are 10 government medical colleges, 10 private medical colleges and 10 minority-run medical colleges in the State. Following the fresh understanding on seat-sharing, the Government will enjoy 772 seats in the private and minority institutions while the private medical colleges can admit 1,315 students and minority institutions 1,010.
