University staff stage protest
Agitation to continue till June 11; they staged hunger strike on Wednesday
IN SUPPORT OF DEMANDS:Members of various employees associations of Karnatak University staging a protest in Dharwad on Thursday.
Dharwad: Members of the Karnatak University D-Group Employees Association, the Association of Retired Non-Teaching Staff, the Association of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Non-Teaching Staff and the Association of Karnatak University Non-Teaching Staff staged a black badge protest at the university on Thursday to press for their various demands.
The protest was part of the 12-day agitation jointly launched by these associations to press for their various demands on May 31.
While on May 31, the association members submitted a memorandum, on June 1, they had staged a demonstration on the university premises.
On Wednesday, they staged a hunger strike. On Thursday, the members of the associations staged a demonstration wearing black badges in protest against the apathy of the university officials towards attending their grievances and fulfilling their demands.
Some of their demands are reimbursement of the amount deducted “illegally” from the pension benefits of employees who retired from service in Karnatak University between 1998 and 2010, release of allowance for uniforms to “D Group” employees, stopping appointments on contract basis and allotment of vacant rooms in the university for the offices of the associations.
The associations would continue their agitation till June 11 to pressure the university to take steps for fulfilling their demands.
