Gulbarga: Pictures and paintings depicting the dangers of consuming tobacco teamed with meaningful street play by students of Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College marked World No Tobacco Day here on Monday.
The awareness campaign was organised jointly by The Hindu, Gurukul Pre-University College of Science and Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College in Gulbarga city.
Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal, who is a medical professional, appreciated the enthusiasm exhibited by students and the creative concepts chosen by the students in the posters prepared by them.
The students of Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College and Gurukul Pre-University College of Science came in a procession to the city's central bus-stand carrying placards and asking people to give up chewing and smoking tobacco. At the bus-stand, the exhibition of posters was inaugurated by Dr. Vishal who went around and sought to know from the students who had prepared these posters about the concept they had chosen.
Dean of the Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College Mallikarjun Bhandari, Ajaykumar and S.R. Nigudgi of the Community Medicine Department took part in the rally and in the main function.
For the commuters waiting at the bus-stand, this was a different experience. Mallamma Biradar from Kiradalli in Yadgir district, said after looking at the posters: “I am shocked by the pictures of people afflicted with oral cancer… I will educate my children about this and make sure they stay away from tobacco.”
Dr. Vishal, in his brief address, appreciated the initiative taken by The Hindu, and the two colleges in effectively presenting the dangers involved in consuming tobacco. Doctors have a crucial role in early detection of oral and lung cancers, and providing timely treatment to save the lives, he said.
Dr. Vishal also selected the poster prepared by Akshay Saxena and his friends as the best, followed by Prasanna and his friends and Triveni Hiremath and her friends. All the students were presented with a commendation certificate. Director of the Jajee Foundation Shivaprasad Jajee and Academic Director Professor Bhurli Prahlad were also present.
