VTU students to continue agitation

Bangalore: Students of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), who have been agitating for the past 11 days, said on Sunday that they would continue their protest till the university scraped the 2002 scheme that gave them only eight years to complete their undergraduate degree.

“All we are asking is that the VTU scrap the 2002 scheme and bring us under the 1998 scheme. The 2002 scheme does not take into account students from social and economically backward categories,” said a student.
The students are against the 2002 scheme of the VTU, wherein they are given eight years to obtain a degree as opposed to 12 years under the 1998 scheme. The students, who have been protesting under the aegis of the Dalit Students' Federation, met VTU Vice-Chancellor H.P. Khincha here on Sunday and apprised him of their demands.

Prof. Khincha accepted their memorandum and promised them that he would forward it to the executive committee of the VTU.

Mr. Khincha told The Hindu that the memorandum would be given to members of the executive committee this week.
