Mysore: More doctors will be able to train in specialised services for cardiac care and surgery with the Medical Council of India (MCI) increasing the seats for postgraduate courses at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (SJICSR), Bangalore.

The institute offers super-speciality PG courses such as D.M. (Cardiology) and M. Ch. (Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.) The seats for each course will be increased from the next academic year, institute director C.N. Manjunath told The Hindu.
Dr. Manjunath, who was here on Saturday, said the number of seats for D.M. (Cardiology) had been increased from 3 to 21, while those for M.Ch. (Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery) had been enhanced from 2 to 12.

“Ours is the only institute in the country where the number of seats for the two super-speciality courses has been increased. The MCI team inspected the institute recently. We shall be offering more seats, according to the MCI recommendation, from the next academic year,” Dr. Manjunath said.

Dr. Manjunath said that the institute was assisting medical colleges in the State in upgrading their cardiac care facilities, providing technical know-how and training.

He said a specialists' team from the institute had trained doctors of the cardiology department of the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli.

“With our technical assistance and support, the institute has started providing services such as angioplasty and angiogram to patients,” he said.

Technical assistance and training had been given to the staff of the Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), a newly-established government medical college.
