Shimoga lawyers oppose Bill on foreign universities
Shimoga: Members of the Shimoga Bar Association submitted a memorandum to Additional Deputy Commissioner Nirvanappa here on Monday urging the Centre to drop the proposed Foreign Universities Bill, 2010 and the National Education and Research Bill, 2010 as they were “detrimental” to the legal education system in the country.
They said the Bill would allow foreign institutions to open law colleges anywhere in the country, without permission, which would not be good for the educational system. They said that the legal profession should not be subjected to any control. The acceptance of the Bill would discredit the Constitution, they said.
The lawyers suggested that legal education should be taken away from the purview of the Bill, as was done with medical and agricultural education. The lawyers wore a red ribbon as a mark of protest against the proposed Bills.
