Varsity confers honorary doctorate on seven

K.S. Nisar Ahmed, Girish Kasaravalli among those honoured

Shimoga: Kuvempu University conferred honorary doctorate degrees on seven distinguished persons at its 20th annual convocation held at the Jnana Sahyadri campus here on Sunday.

Administrator of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham V.R. Gowrishankar, psychiatrist K.A. Ashok Pai, Kannada poet K.S. Nisar Ahmed, writer and social worker B.T. Lalitha Naik and film director Girish Kasaravalli were among those chosen for the honour.
Archaeologist S.R. Rao and educationist P.V. Krishna Bhat did not attend to collect their doctorate degrees.
‘Great significance'
Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Mr. Ahmed said he considered the doctorate a great honour.

“I attach greater significance to it than other such degrees I have received so far, as it is given by a university named after the great humanist and poet Kuvempu, whom I consider my guru and conscience keeper,” he said.
‘Honour for STs'
Ms. Naik thanked the university for honouring her and said that it was an honour for the Scheduled Tribe community, to which she belonged, as well. Ms. Naik expressed her happiness over the passage of the Women's Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
Citation
Vice-Chancellor B.S. Sherigara conferred the degrees in the absence of Governor and Chancellor H.R. Bharadwaj, and the Pro-Chancellor and Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavali.

He read out the citation of the recipients, hailing their contribution in their individual fields.
