Spectre of funds crunch haunts Kuvempu varsity

Many colleges under it are now with new varsity in Davangere
  • Kuvempu University is left with only 83 degree colleges
  • Postgraduate centre at Kadur to move to new building soon
Shimoga: Kuvempu University is likely to face financial difficulty with a good number of colleges under its jurisdiction being brought under the new university in Davangere.

Kuvempu University is left with only 83 degree colleges, offering Arts and Science courses, after 110 colleges, including those providing technical and management courses, were transferred to the new university. The transfer of colleges is likely to result in a marked decline in the Government's plan and non-plan grants to the varsity.
A main area of concern is the award of gold medals. Over 70 per cent of the 126 gold medals are instituted by the family of Shamanur Shivashankarappa, founder-secretary of the Bapuji Education Society, Davangere, and many of them are presented to achievers in technical and management courses.

It remains to be seen whether the family would insist that the gold medals instituted by them be transferred to the new university.

Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigara said that the university would request the Shivashankarappa family to allow the medals to remain with the varsity, while admitting that he was uncertain about getting a favourable response.
Gold price rise
Besides, the university has been affected by the sharp rise in the market value of the yellow metal.

Interest earned on money deposited in a bank towards the awards is about Rs. 2,000, while a gold medal costs around Rs. 3,500, forcing the university to meet the difference.

Prof. Sherigara said efforts would have to be made to seek more research grants and collect higher fees from students of job-oriented courses to mobilise resources.

He, however, ruled out the possibility of increasing fees for payment seats. “In fact, it has been rationalised for the convenience of students,” he said.
Postgraduate centre
Prof. Sherigara said the establishment of the new postgraduate centre providing MBA, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Business Economics courses, at Kadur in Chikmagalur district three years ago, was a success story for the university.

The centre, now functioning from a temporary building, would move into its own building soon, he added.
