Varsity name proposal dropped

Bangalore: The State Government has dropped its proposal to name Tumkur University after Dr. Shivakumara Swami of Siddaganga Math, Tumkur. In the 2009-10 budget, the Government has proposed to name the Tumkur university after Dr. Shivakumara Swami of Siddaganga Math, Tumkur.
The Government's Action Taken Report on Budget 2009-10 stated that “the proposal did not find favour with Dr. Shivakumara Swami. It has been dropped”.

It said Rs. 8.75 crore had been provided for Tumkur University as development grant while Rs. 5.62 crore had been released so far.

Similarly, Rs. 9.5 crore had been provided for the Women's University in Bijapur and Rs. 4.75 crore had been released.

The report said the Government has proposed to establish postgraduation study centres in government first grade colleges.

On establishment of a PG centre of the Mangalore University at Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, the report said out of the proposed Rs. 2 crore, the Government had sanctioned Rs. 1.5 crore. A sum of Rs. 1.25 crore had been released for establishment of the Dr. Ambedkar Research Centre at Gulbarga University.

On the proposal of establishing a Davangere University in the budget for 2009-10, the report said the vice-chancellor had been appointed and Rs. 6.25 crore had been released to the university. The report said there was a proposal for sanctioning Rs. 1 crore for establishing a research centre in Bangalore University in the name of noted labour leader (late) Sri Alampalli Venkataram.
