Bangalore: The Legislative Council witnessed pandemonium for over 20 minutes on Wednesday over the Government's decision to hand over 80 acres of land on the Hampi campus of Kannada University to a private organisation, Vijayanagar Punashetana Pratishtana Trust.
The House witnessed noisy scenes during the Zero Hour even as Leader of the Opposition Motamma demanded that the Government reverse its decision.
Many Opposition members, including M.C. Nanaiah and Y.S.V. Datta of the Janata Dal ( Secular), M.P. Nadagouda of the Janata Dal ( United) and V.R. Sudarshan of the Congress entered the well of the House demanding a detailed discussion on the issue.
Mr. Nanaiah and Mr. Sudarshan pointed out that there had been a public outcry against the “stubborn attitude” of the Government for not responding to the request of many acclaimed writers and educationists such as U.R. Ananthamurthy and Chandrashekhara Kambar to reverse its decision in the larger interest of education.
The reported statement of the Minister for Higher Education that he would take stern action against the university staff if they issued statements against the Government also came under criticism.
Two acclaimed writers working with the university had resigned protesting against Government's stand, they said.
Considering the public resentment, the Government should withdraw its reported order issued in favour of the private organisation in question.
A passing reference to L.K. Advani led to a further war of words between the ruling and the Opposition Benches. While certain remarks made by Minister for Tourism G. Janardan Reddy and others were expunged, Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda was heard shouting: “We will do it. You cannot dictate terms. We have the mandate to do what we want.”
Chairperson Veeranna M. Mathikatti asked the Opposition to bring in the matter for discussion under different rule as any matter brought up during Zero Hour could not be accommodated for a detailed discussion.
He adjourned the House for over 30 minutes and convened a meeting of the leaders in his chamber.
Later, he announced that the House would discuss the issue on priority on Thursday.
