Students do college, State proud
22-member team from Bijapur wins Indo-Asian car racing competition

Bijapur: A 22-member team from the P.G. Halakatti College of Engineering and Technology has brought laurels to the institution, the district and the State by winning the first prize at BAJA ASIA, SAE-2010, an international four-wheeler racing competition organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at Indore, Madhya Pradesh, recently.
Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, college principal S.J. Arvekar said the team, called Auto Knights, had worked hard for 10 months to design and fabricate a racing car to take part in the competition.
The project was implemented under the guidance of college teacher I.G. Bhavi and other faculty members of the Automobile Engineering Department. The cost of the project was Rs. 3.5 lakh and was sponsored by various agencies in Bijapur and other districts.
Before taking part in the competition, the car was sent for approval to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune. In the final competition, there were 80 participants from different institutions all over India and other Asian countries. The participants were from the Indian Institutes of Technology, the National Institutes of Technology and other reputed centres of learning.
The team won the competition in the main event, with a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh and the winner’s trophy. This is the first time a south Indian team has won this event.
The principal congratulated the parents, staff and people who directly or indirectly contributed to the success of the project.
