Students to protest

Udupi: Students will stage a protest in front of the office of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) at Brahmavar in Udupi district on Saturday against frequent power shutdowns.

Prithviraj Shetty, zonal president of Students Organisations, told presspersons on Thursday that students were facing hardship owing to unscheduled power shutdowns in and around Brahmavar, even as they were preparing for their examinations, which were fast approaching. Farmers and small business people were also hit hard by the erratic power supply, he said.
Students of St. Mary’s Syrian College, SMS Pre-University College, Crossland College and Barkur Rukmini Shedti College, their parents and the general public will be participating in the protest. The protest in front of the Mescom office will be preceded by a procession by students.

Officials of Mescom will be urged to resolve the problem within a week. Otherwise, students would launch a district-wide agitation, Mr. Shetty said.

President of St. Mary’s Syrian College Students’ Union Nayan Shetty, vice-president Dheeraj Shetty, president of Crossland College Students’ Union Gururaj Hegde and student leader Nagesh were present.
