Guest lecturers begin indefinite dharna
A LAST-DITCH EFFORT: Guest lecturers of Karnatak University on indefinite dharna in Dharwad on Wednesday in support of their demand for higher remuneration.
Dharwad: Guest Lecturers and Assistant Lecturers working under the jurisdiction of Karnatak University began indefinite dharna in front of the administrative office building of the university here on Wednesday to press for their various demands.
The guest lecturers and assistant lectures are demanding that they should be given an enhanced remuneration of Rs. 1,000 per class as per the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission up to a maximum of Rs. 25,000 a month. They are demanding that guest lecturers should be paid remuneration for all the 12 months and proper remuneration should be fixed for assistant lecturers.
Beginning the protest on Wednesday, they said that the university Vice-Chancellor had issued an order cancelling the appointments of the guest/assistant lecturers in the university on January 16 and demanded that it should be withdrawn immediately.
They then submitted a memorandum containing their eight demands to the Registrar (Evaluation) C. Rajashekhar.
Clarifies
Meanwhile, the Registrar has issued a press release saying that the rates of remuneration were known to the guest lecturers before they accepted the assignments. He said that the there had been no mention of the new UGC pay scale about the remuneration to be paid to the guest faculty. He said the question of increasing the increasing the remuneration of guest faculty was under consideration of the university and would be taken up in the coming Syndicate meeting. As the 60th convocation of the university would be held on February 8, it would not be possible to resolve the issue immediately, the Registrar has said.
And he has appealed to the guest lecturers not to continue with the protest.
