Students of ‘deemed universities’ anxious
  • They hope that the decision does not affect their future
  • Some wonder if they will have to repeat another year
Bangalore: Students of Christ University and Jain University — the institutions in the city that are set to lose their privileged status as deemed-to-be universities — are an anxious lot.

Despite the Union Government making it clear that their interests will be protected, the students appear curious to learn more about the reasons behind the sudden decision to strip the institutions of the deemed-to-be university status.
Though the students of these institutions are to be reverted to the university to which the institution was earlier affiliated, the students are hoping that the Centre’s decision does not adversely affect their future.

“The syllabus we have is different from the Bangalore University syllabus. Will we have to appear for the exam of Bangalore University if we are to receive their degrees?” Jayanth P.S., a student of first year BA, wanted to know.

Kishore, a student of second year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at Christ University, was not sure whether Bangalore University had a BBA course.

“What will be our fate if Bangalore University has no BBA course?” he wondered. Mohan, also a first year student of Jain University, wondered whether they would have to repeat another year under Bangalore University. “If we have to repeat a year, we will not only have to pay fees afresh, we will waste a whole year,” he said.

Another student of Christ University could not help, but wonder whether the Centre’s move to derecognise the institution would cast its shadow on the certificate he receives.

“Once we pass out what will happen to our certification,” he sought to know.

But a few students like M. Tilak, a second year student of Jain University, is hopeful that their institution will retain the deemed university tag. “It is not easy to deny the institution the tag of deemed university. Even in the worst case scenario, we will get back to Bangalore University. I don’t think we need to worry about losing a year”, he said.
