Dr. Gangubai Hanagal Music and Performing Arts University will start functioning from this September.
It will launch “Sangeeta Karanji”, a programme to attract students to the university.
Participating in an interaction programme organised by the Mysore District Journalists’ Association here on Thursday, newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the university Hanumanna Naik Dore said students with pre-university and any basic degree could take up the courses offered by the university. “However, the university will conduct an entrance test for students seeking admission,” he added.
On the inclusion of performing arts, he said that the experts, who had deliberated on the matter, opposed limiting the university only to music.
Dr. Dore said that the Government had earmarked Rs. 5 crore for the university. A sum of Rs. 25 crore had been sought for the development of the university.
He expressed the hope that the university would include the proposal in the coming budget.
He said that the ground-breaking ceremony to construct buildings would be held shortly. It had been decided to invite Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to the function.
On the alternative plan to conduct classes in view of the delay in construction of buildings, he said that the Government had handed over 100 acres of land at Varakodu village near Varuna.
As it would take some time to commence construction work on the land allotted, it had been decided to put up temporary structures to conduct classes.
Courses in various forms of music such as Hindustani, Carnatic, folk, light, western and cinema would be offered. Classes in various forms of dance, including, Bharatanatya, Odissi, Kathak and basics in dramatics would be offered, he said.
The university would impart education in Gurukula and modern systems. While the Gurukula system would help groom artistes, the modern system would help students in getting academic qualification. Residential and non-residential courses would be offered in the Gurukula system.
It had been planned to extend online mode of education in music and performing arts, he said.
