Mangalore University to confer honorary doctorate on seven

DRDO Chief Controller Sivathanu Pillai is among the recipients


Mangalore: Gemmologist and a collector of sea shells M. Mukunda Prabhu and distinguished scientist and Chief Controller of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) A. Sivathanu Pillai are among seven persons chosen by the Mangalore University for conferring honorary doctorate degrees at its 27th annual convocation on Wednesday.

The remaining five are: legal experts B.V. Acharya and Y.M. Chandrashekara Sharma, educationist M.K. Panduranga Setty, Chancellor of Nitte University N. Vinaya Hegde and builder and philanthropist P. Dayananda Pai.
Revealing this to presspersons here on Monday vice-chancellor of the university K.M. Kaveriappa said that chairman of Union Public Service Commission D.P. Agrawal would deliver the convocation address at Mangalagangotri.

Mr. Prabhu has collected a large number of shells from different parts of the world and donated 3,000 shells of 2,000 rare species, which had high commercial value, to the Department of Zoology free of cost for education and research purposes. Mr. Prabhu is also a collector of coins. The Reserve Bank of India has displayed some of the coins collected by him at its Mumbai branch. In addition, Mr. Prabhu is a collector of stamps.

Vice-chancellor Mr. Kaveriappa said that Mr. Pillai had been chosen for the honour based on his contribution to space and missile technology. Mr. Sharma has published a glossary of legal terminologies in Kannada. Mr. Acharya, who was the Advocate General of the State, had been chosen for his contributions to legal field.

Mr. Setty and Mr. Hegde have contributed for the promotion education in the State while Mr. Pai is a social worker and philanthropist.

Mr. Kaveriappa said that Mr. Pillai would be conferred the honorary doctor of science degree and the remaining six would be given honorary doctor of literature degrees. He said that 62 candidates would receive the doctorate degrees at the convocation. Of them 35 were from science faculty, 25 from humanities, three commerce and one education. In addition, 29 candidates would be given gold medals and 58 cash prizes.
